I was in Gili Air back in November 2010 as I was telling you last time. Such a long, long time ago, I can’t believe how time flies.
What you need to know is that there are 3 small islands that people go to, the three Gilis. You have Gili Trawangan, or Gili T as it’s also known, this one is more of a party island, people usually go from Kuta to Gili T to continue their partying activities. Then you have Gili Meno, which is more of a couples romantic destination. Lastly you have Gili Air, which is in between the other two.
So I went to Gili Air, I walked around looking for a place to stay, a lot of places over my budget, until I found these beautiful bungalows, Gita Gili Bungalows. They had a garden at the front but from my one I could see the sea. I could chill on my hammock and enjoy the sunset.
Breakfast was included with the price so I used to wake up and go have breakfast in front of the sea, super nice, so quiet and peaceful. It was just perfect.
What we mainly did here was sunbathe, swim ALL DAY and just hangout. I met a nice group of local people as well as some people from Switzerland, America, Belgium and Spain. We used to spend the night at the bar, playing the guitar (ok I don’t play but someone else did) and play games.
One of the nights we all went out partying to Gili T and one of the local dudes took us in his boat. It was fun for a night and it was crowded with loads of people. We went to one of the clubs, danced a lot and had a few drinks. It was a really cool night.
The water in Gili Air is clear so it’s the perfect place to explore and try to spot fish so another thing that I did here was snorkelling. So we got our mask and the fins (which I hate because I can’t swim properly with them) and off we went. We were following one of the local guys because he said he saw sea turtles the day before. So we followed him around and suddenly BOOM!! There it was, a sea turtle, for me it was a big one. It was just so amazing, I couldn’t believe it. I’d never seen one in real life before but it was incredible. I just wanted to swim along with it forever. But it was too fast and it was going too deep so I had to stop☹.
It doesn’t seem like I did much there but sometimes you don’t need to do a lot to have a good time. I had a great experience and made lots of memories, I met incredible people that I still keep in contact with and even meet again after all these years! So yes Gili Air has a special place in my heart, and I’m most definitely going back ☺.
